Our brief was to come up with a phased detailed cost Life Time Plan for the construction of an Interim Storage Facility at Sellafield which will be used for the interim storage of nuclear waste pending the construction of the geological disposal facility. We adopted the following key steps in the execution of this assignment:-

- Meeting with technical nuclear engineering professionals in view to understanding the technical drawings and different components of the equipment to be used in the Interim Storage Facility;
- Dissociate the different identified equipment to be procured from the Interim Storage Facility;
- Then build the estimates for each equipment identified as well as the estimated cost for the construction of the Interim Storage facility itself;
- Calculate all the Estimating Uncertainty together with the Contingency;
- Compare the estimate results from similar type of building constructed at Sellafield in view to assessing rationality;
- Benchmark the estimated cost of construction of Interim Storage facility at Sellafield with the actual cost of construction similar facilities at Magnox Ltd nuclear sites and explained variances.
- Draft the Board papers for approval by the Board of Directors.

Cost Model From Scratch

Build A Cost Model for the procurement of Ductile Cast Iron Containers at Sellafield

Our brief was to come up with a phased detailed cost Life Time Plan for the procurement of ductile cast iron containers which would be used for the interim storage of radioactive nuclear waste at Sellafield. We adopted the following steps in the execution of this assignment:-

- Meeting with technical nuclear engineering professionals in view to understanding the business rationale for a different type of nuclear waste storage box;
- Go through technical materials and technical reports from the supply chain;
- Understand the different quotes from the supply chain for different boxes and ascertain from the technical team the type of ductile cast iron containers that Sellafield would require for this type of waste and understand the likely supply chain cost from the price list received from the supply chain;
- Build a 3 Point Estimate Cost Model from scratch using the price information from the supply chain;
- The quantity of boxes to be procured was also estimated and both an Estimating Uncertainty in ARM was carried out together with the level of Contingency;
- Benchmark the cost model for the procurement of self-shielded boxes with the cost of Yellow Boxes by Magnox;
- The use the cost information to build the Life Time Plan

Parametric Cost Estimating

Build A Parametric Cost Model For An Interim Storage Facility At Sellafield

Our brief was to come up with a phased cost Life Time Plan for the construction of an Interim Storage Facility at Sellafield which will be used for the interim storage of nuclear waste pending the construction of the geological disposal facility. We adopted the following key steps in the execution of this assignment:-

- Meeting with technical nuclear engineering professionals in view to assessing inventory of the different types of nuclear wastes to be stored;
- Categorise the different types of nuclear wastes in terms of management prioritisation for interim storage and quantify for each type of nuclear waste;
- Hold Risk Workshop to understand the assumptions, exclusions and boundaries
- Work with technical and assess the size of the container, the quantity of waste that each container could hold and the space that it would require in the interim storage facility and then used the data to quantify the potential size of the Interim Storage Facility;
- Used a volumetric cost estimating model to calculate the cost of constructing an interim storage facility at Sellafield;
- Use ARM to quantify the Estimating Uncertainty using 3 Points Estimate;
- Use Pertmaster to quantify the Contingency using identified project risks as a base;
- Then use the cost information to build the Life Time Plan.
